Journalist Elias investigates the background to a suicide in a village in East Westphalia. Günther Sperl, son of the local butcher, has taken his own life after years of humiliation and despair. His oversensitive talent was not appreciated in the stuffy provincial atmosphere. Elias, who shares his fear of deviating from the "normal", feels a strong inner closeness to him and delves deeper and deeper into the outsider's past. During his research, he himself experiences the coldness and narrow-mindedness of the villagers.

Three men plot to assassinate the dictator of their country, but their plan fails and one of them is captured and imprisoned. Even after considerable torture and interrogation, the revolutionary maintains his silence as to the names of his accomplices. Soon he is killed, though no one seems to know who is responsible for his death. Four years later another regime has been established, and a former inmate of the dead revolutionary finds himself in a position of power. He now intends to find out who was responsible for the man's death. After this German tale first took the form of a radio play and then a stage production, character actor Peter Carsten decided to produce this film version.

In the loneliness of the Lower Havel lowlands, one of the last bird paradise in Germany, twelve-year-old Lea lives alone with her father Lutz, a passionate environmentalist. She is on the cusp of adulthood, confronted with the challenges of the present and the pains of the past. She often feels lonely in the childhood-remote world in which she lives, in which schools are closed and people leave. Even the father, who has withdrawn from the world, is increasingly becoming a problem for Lea, who longs for fellowship.

A nurse abandoned by her lover and a laid-off worker give themselves over to the hustle and bustle of the big city in their loneliness and search for communication. A telephone misconnection causes them to meet for a few minutes, only to lose each other again immediately.
